I enjoy exploring the underlying substance of the material world as an artist and in general.
As a child I had a powerful realisation that we are born with everything needed - everything can be found within - though I didn’t understand how that knowing would translate in any practical way. Contemplating this experience as I grew up provided me with a drive to locate what provides me with emotional, philosophical and spiritual depth, always searching beneath the surface gloss of life for underlying meaning.
In this painting of Underworld I am depicting layers of being, observing the ways the outer world distorts and masks the inner.
Colour is both influencer and influenced in this painting. Warm tones create an optimistic atmosphere of well-being and emotional volatility while cool colours and tones in the underlying, self-perpetuating world create a tranquil, calming core from which movement, action and vibrant life springs.
Each colour is impacted by those surrounding it, evoking a unique emotion I navigate instinctively throughout my painting process.
My artistic practice begins with a still-life composition I set up in my studio.
In Underworld I wanted to explore a theme of beauty and its underlying source - the way dynamic actions require a grounded base to flourish and expand.
To explore my theme I placed an enclosed (self-perpetuating) terrarium I made underneath an antique apothecary bottle spilling an abundance of lilies, clematis, a dahlia and chamomile from my garden.
My intention was to create a dialogue between the elements of my composition, incorporating unplanned elements such as light both within and without the glass, reflecting the way life itself presents diverse perspectives from moment to moment on both conscious and unconscious levels.
I believe we are all subject to influence from within and without; these themes are of universal interest. I am enormously comforted by the idea there is a world of depth and meaning beneath the transient, beautiful material outer world and my intention is that Underworld conveys the joy of living a multi-layered, chaotic life using every painterly element - light, colour, composition, concept, technique and philosophy - available to me.
