The Palette Project Art Prize

Congratulations to Michelle Morton on being awarded First Prize

Tidal Bloom is a celebration of layered surface chemistry and fluidity, achieved through meticulous glaze application over hand-built stoneware. Inspired by coastal coral blooms and tidal formations, the sculpture features an intentionally curated palette of soft seafoam greens, weathered sand, and cool oceanic blues. These tones were achieved through a blend of satin and gloss glazes layered between the first and second firings, encouraging pooling in the deep folds and organic high points. Iron speckles and oxidised edges offer natural variation, mimicking the mineral shifts of reef structures beneath moving water. Colour is not just surface-deep—it is integrated into the overall form to reflect rhythm and flow.
