Mixed Media Ceramic
45cm Diameter
The portrait of the Emperor, Gongzhi has been derived from a Ming Dynasty Screen featuring the Ruler in his ceremonial attire and represented on a ceramic platter. The image had great appeal for me. The benign face of the Emperor establishes direct gaze with the viewer in stark contrast to the fierce dragons embroidered on his imperial robes. Do they speak of a powerful ruler capable of much more than his inscrutable expression would suggest?
The colourful and glazed result is achieved by first drawing and then painting the subject prior to the first firing. The platter was then glazed with a clear and glossy finish before its second and final firing. Oriental clouds and dragons are also emblazoned on the underside of the platter.
The piece is housed in a cobalt blue frame which can be wall mounted.
