My response to this exciting event ' The Palette Project ', has been to submit a work that offers a very subdued, constrained palette or colour range.

This seeming contradiction brings into sharp focus the critical role colour plays in the creation of images. Colour is a key visual communicator for the artist and operates beyond language, culture, gender or age. Response to colour is a part of our shared universal humanity.
My entry 'Swept Away', is a sepia toned, colour pencil drawing featuring bird-like creatures being swept away in a torrent. The sepia colours are evocative of a past era and induce reflection, feelings of nostalgia and a sense of longing, melancholy and vulnerability.
This limited tonal range requires care to achieve contrast, definition and clarity of form. The delicate pencil lines bring rhythm, while the soft blended warm magenta hues and indigo highlights in the shadows bring balance.
The concept for this work began with a series of photos I took of beach sand. I became enthralled by the patterns formed in the sand by the water and wind. I saw how this image of sand could be used as a backdrop or background, and drew and coloured my image directly onto the print of the photo.
For me the interplay of this background and the drawn image creates a poignant world of ambiguity and beauty.
My image has been professionally printed and framed using archival quality products, and is also available as an unframed print.
