Mixed media on canvas framed in an ash timber float frame
I based my colour selection on the colour wheel initially, with complementary opposites depicted in the purple and yellow vessel and the orange and blue flowers. Then I just let my instincts take me on a journey.
Revisiting my knowledge of colour theory from my Uni days, has been a lovely memory recall. Creating tints, shades and playing with colour saturation in certain sections like the fluro orange flowers and fluro yellow stripes against the pale violet vessel. Mixing new colour combinations to create depth and solid colour sections to bring objects forward and others back.
I absolutely love colour. I love how it can change your mood. For me this piece is about lifting one's spirits! “Painted Joy”!
I have painted for many years and know now that for me the skill is knowing that each brushstroke can be changed. I am not afraid now to paint over sections and there is more of a trusting involved that I will get it in the end!
I have used different sized brushes to convey the patterns and I have deliberately added layers to depict a richness and depth with certain sections. My eye is drawn to the orange flowers initially and then because of the ‘business’ of this piece, the eye then goes on to explore the piece in its entirety. The background strips being a little uneven to give the idea of the background moving slightly and the foreground almost playing with the eye with the strips and the organic flow of the wave-like lines. The combination of the almost rigidness of the orange flowers against the totally organic shaped sienna flowers on the vessel.
I feel this piece is of its own individuality as I am very interested in patterns and mixing it up to create a story. The patterns might resonate with the viewer as a vision from the 70’s or a special corner in a room that needs to be brightened amongst the stillness and chill of a winter morning.
Mark making becomes a meditation in the creation of this piece. The repetition and joy in placing one colour against another to make it pop, especially the complementary colours. The thrill of seeing the finished product after many hours and conversations around our dining room table and easel viewing!
My daughter saying, “Don’t touch it Mummy”! And then I did and messed it up on a bad day!!
And the dedication in bringing it back to the completed piece we view today. This piece has been on its own life journey. It holds many emotions!
The evenness and numbering depicted in “Painted Joy”, all even numbers. Six violet/purple flowers and six orange and blue flowers with just two vessels. I was always taught at Uni to use odd numbers in the placing of objects but felt with the business of the background even numbers were needed. I feel it just works!
