Science says it’s luciferin and luciferase, chemicals with names like fallen angels, but standing there, shin-deep in glowing surf, I didn’t care. The water pulsed like it knew something I didn’t. Jervis Bay has a way of showing you things when you least deserve them. That eerie blue bloom only turns up when the timing’s just right, late summer, calm seas, no moon, and enough leftover heat in the air to keep you awake. Some nights it’s nothing. Other nights, it’s biblical. The dinoflagellates, tiny, floating anarchists, flare up when disturbed, lighting the sea like it’s catching fire in slow motion. Locals say you’ve gotta chase the whispers, someone spots it at Callala, another swears it’s glowing down at Plantation Point. But when you’re in it, really in it, none of that matters. You forget the science, the names, even where you are. It’s just you and the water, and this strange, electric hush that feels like the edge of something enormous.
