BIKINI BOTTOM by Gelbell
Now showing at Gallery Alchemy from October 3rd to October 31st
Gallery Alchemy proudly presents Bikini Bottom, a solo exhibition by Gelbell, the collaborative moniker of Australian artist duo Angelica Wootton and Isabella Greene. Known for their bold, expressive canvases and chaotic-yet-intuitive rhythm, Gelbell’s practice is a shared act of creation — two hands, one surface, endless layers.
In Bikini Bottom, statuesque figures, oversized cigarettes, and surreal domestic motifs swirl through large-scale compositions that are equal parts playful and pointed. The works draw from lived experience, memory, and the everyday, offering a satirical take on the strange poetry of modern life.
With backgrounds in interior and furniture design, Wootton and Greene bring a distinct spatial awareness to their self-taught painting approach — structured, spontaneous, and always alive with energy.
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 18th, from 6pm to 8pm in Milton.
Gelbell is the collaborative moniker of Australian artist duo Angelica Wootton and Isabella Greene. Working side-by-side on the same canvas, the longtime friends have developed a bold, expressive painting practice marked by chaotic energy, layered textures, and a shared, unspoken rhythm. Though self-taught as painters, both artists come from design backgrounds, Wootton in interiors and Greene in furniture, giving their work an intuitive sense of structure and spatial awareness. Their large-scale works explore the everyday through statuesque figures and satirical motifs (oversized hats, cigarettes, boots) drawn from observation, memory, and lived experience.
Inspired by people-watching, body language, and the female form, Gelbell’s work celebrates the real, the awkward, and the unapologetically human. Painting with hands, feet, and found objects, they approach canvas like a sculptural surface, laying down and stripping back layers in a spontaneous, physical process. Based seasonally between coastal Victoria and various temporary studios abroad, Gelbell’s work is shaped by place and always made together. Since launching their practice in 2020, they’ve exhibited across Australia and Europe, including shows in Sydney, Melbourne, and Ibiza. Their work is held in private collections worldwide, with features in Vogue Living, The Design Files, and InStyle Australia.
