PENELOPE BOYD

Penelope Boyd (b. 1982) is a painter from Canberra, Australia.

Inspired by the grandeur of nature and the mysterious allure of the Sublime, Penelope Boyd’s portraits become a canvas for exploration, drawing from the vast tapestry of art history, mythology, and folklore.

Within these recognisable tropes, she constructs narratives that defy
convention, unraveling stories of empowered yet anonymous girls and young women whose undertakings flirt with mischief and danger.

The delicate interplay between the subjects and their surroundings underscores the fragile equilibrium between humanity and nature, highlighting the inherent dangers that lurk beneath the serene surface.

Masks, a recurring motif in her work, play a crucial role, providing anonymity to her cast of mysterious characters and their animal companions.

Penelope’s work is held in private collections across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and beyond.
