Taz Witkamp

Taz Witkamp is an Australian artist working on Yuin Country, along the South Coast of New South Wales.
Her connection to oil painting runs deep—passed down through four generations of artists. Her mother, grandfather, and great-grandfather each explored their own approach to the medium while painting in the family’s heritage studio home in Avalon Beach, Sydney. Taz began experimenting with oil paint from a young age, using her mother’s leftover tubes and worn brushes to explore the material's rich, tactile qualities.
As her practice matured—supported by a Bachelor of Fine Art from UNSW—Taz followed her creative curiosity around the world. A deep love for alpine environments eventually led her to Japan, where she developed an appreciation for the gestural ink work and flattened compositions found in traditional Japanese art. A local bar invited her to paint a large canvas live, and she embraced the exhilarating practice of Live Painting, creating spontaneous works in just a few hours while the crowd danced and sipped sake around her.
Returning home, she applied this impulsive, responsive style to the Australian bush—capturing fleeting moments in landscapes close to her heart. The COVID lockdowns became a bittersweet turning point, grounding her in local national parks that were still healing from the devastation of the Black Summer fires. She painted them with care and reverence.
From her South Coast base, Taz has since explored a wide range of Australian scenes. She has completed two residencies in Tasmania and looks forward to painting across more remote and wild corners of the continent.
Her work is a celebration of nature and a heartfelt response to the climate and biodiversity crisis. For Taz, painting is not just a practice—it is a witness statement to a world in urgent need of care.
