Em Reid
Emily has spent the majority of her life on the South Coast of NSW. With her Dad having been an illustrator for Disney and her Grandfather being a sign writer; creativity has always been a part of her identity.
Her journey as an artist first began with illustrative works. Pencil and pen depicting elements of realism in a pure and raw way. She took her skills and passed them onto the younger generation through her Art Class teachings.
In 2015 she opened a collective Art space with her best friend Laura. From there she began her tattoo apprenticeship after working next door to a local studio and becoming intrigued with the process. She took her love of illustration and all things dainty and simplistic into the fine line category of the tattooing world and his since become an established tattoo artist very quickly in her career with clients still to this day traveling from Sydney, Canberra and outer state just to have her designs permanently inked into their skin.
She went on to take over the tattoo studio she learnt in which then became Blanc Space Tattoo Studio as well as becoming the Graphic Designer for local Brewery, Dangerous Ales. Her artistic skills and talent have seen her make her mark all around including murals in Bali, doing clothing designs for the likes of General Pants and international brand, Savannah Morrow the label and various other businesses.
For this collection of works “LITERAL & LATERAL” (2024) Emily pays homage to her earlier artistic style whilst incorporating the new skills she has learnt from her Graphic design and tattooing. It was inspired by her travels through the Mediterranean and noticing these nostalgic similarities here on the South Coast. The illustrative simplicity of each subject is similar to her tattooing style but with exaggerated textures and details.
This is Emily’s first public exhibition in over 10 years and is a visual blend of the skills she used as a younger artist vs the techniques she’s continuing to execute as a well established tattoo artist.
