Tank has always been personally attracted to art which expresses an opinion or idea to generate thought and reflection. “I generally believe that the role of an artist is to create images which express a different or alternative interpretation of life and the world”.
My paintings, which frequently take a critical view of social, political or cultural issues, are often a reflection of subjective experiences and sentiments; expressed through the use of common objects displayed in unlikely or impossible situations. Tank’s personal emotional state or mood can often infiltrate his work – where loneliness may be expressed as a solitary animal in a box, or the drudgery of daily chores will metamorphose into an image of a man carrying a refrigerator.
The methodology by which I create can vary, however, I do predominantly prefer to allow each painting to evolve on the canvas, adding and changing until satisfied that the image portrays the intended thoughts or idea. Further enjoyment is found in creating titles which reflect the intended message, particularly those which are created through a play on words or common expressions.
I enjoy the sense of discovery in the development of each painting and title; analogous to the process of an author creating a book containing a story or certain ideology; the final product is a collection of it’s smaller parts.
Overall art brings me happiness. It excites me to create images that I’ve never seen before and to see how different emotions can be portrayed.
