Cellophane by Taz Witkamp, featuring Lea Durie
In her third solo exhibition, Taz Witkamp continues her poetic exploration of light, landscape, and perception—this time in collaboration with celebrated ceramist Lea Durie. Together, the artists present a shared meditation on atmosphere as both subject and medium.
Witkamp’s new body of work considers the shifting nature of the sky, not as a constant, but as a dynamic filter—an ever-changing sheet through which light is refracted, colour is shaped, and meaning is altered. Her paintings reflect a growing sensitivity to the subtle transitions of light across the seasons: the elongated golden hues of summer, the silvery shimmer that winter lends to the gum leaves, and the strange, luminous stillness of a world reflected in puddles or seen through smoke.
As environmental changes become more tangible, Witkamp sees atmosphere not just as backdrop, but as presence—something that envelops and moves through us, affecting what and how we see. Her work bears witness to this evolving relationship: the way experience, memory, and uncertainty refract our view of the world, like light through a prism.
Paired with Lea Durie’s tactile ceramic forms—rooted in earth and elemental transformation—this exhibition offers a thoughtful and timely reflection on beauty, fragility, and the ever-shifting lens through which we see the world.
